Leicestershire's Sustainable Community Strategy is the county's response to Government Legislation,  requiring a  new drive for a community strategy to reconcile the three elements of sustainability – economic, social and environmental, in a document which identifys and shares local priorities.  It also  introduced a new duty to prepare a Local Area Agreement.  An executive summary of the Strategy, known as the SCS, can be found here.  Summary, SCS

The seven themes in the strategy are...

Improved life chances for vulnerable people and places

Stronger, more cohesive communities

A safe and attractive place to live and work

A more effective response to climate change

A prosperous, innovative and dynamic economy

A healthier Leicestershire

More effective and efficient service delivery

Local Area Agreement - LAA

Local Area Agreements (LAA) were introduced by central government in 2005. They are written agreements which set out how public, voluntary and private sector bodies within an area will work together to improve the quality of life for residents over a three year period. The agreements are signed between central government and local government with local government responsible for bringing together local partners through the Local Strategic Partnership. The agreement lays out the priority outcomes (positive changes) for an area, the indicators which measure the achievement of those outcomes (e.g. reduce overall crime) and an explanation of how the outcomes are to be delivered (through services and projects).

Leicestershire’s Second LAA was signed in June 2008 to cover the period 2008 – 2011.

The Cultural Strategy identifies a range of strategic aims as challenges set to identify or improve the potential for enhancing the quality of life in Leicestershire and providing opportunities to involve as many people as possible.
